In 2003, in the Mavuco district of Mozambique, esteemed gem hunter Don Kogen unearthed an extraordinary 830-carat Paraiba tourmaline crystal. This remarkable find, characterized by its intense neon blue-green hue and copper-rich composition, remained untouched for years, safeguarded for its exceptional potential.
A Vision Realized
In 2025, inspired by the stone’s latent brilliance, Don Kogen, alongside his wife, renowned jewelry designer Kat Florence, embarked on a journey to reveal its true beauty. The initial cut yielded a 315-carat gem; however, it exhibited “windowing,” a common issue in large tourmalines that diminishes their inner fire.
Refusing to settle, Kat Florence led her team through meticulous analysis and precision cutting, culminating in a masterpiece: The KAT Florence Lumina. This 181.61-carat gem stands as the largest flawless Paraiba tourmaline of its kind—unheated, vividly saturated, and masterfully faceted to unleash its brilliance from every angle.
